Very nice small camera
Has incredible features for small camera. Took a while to learn most of features but very easy to use (touch screen) Wife loves it. Thin, fits in handbag nicely. good zoom range, clear well exposed pictures

Great features, easy to use, solid design!
I just got this camera, and it's fantastic!! The touch screens on some of the older or less expensive Cybershot models go all funky-colored when you press on them, but this model's touch screen is much sturdier- no wavy color effects when you press on it. It also comes with a 4G memory, which equals about 1000 photos at the 10MP setting and over 1500 at the 5MP setting!!

My favorite feature is the way the battery charges. It's a little rectangular battery that you slide out of the camera and insert into a dock with a flip-out outlet plug. You don't have to plug the camera itself into anything, which is fantastic for a camera as slim as this! What makes this such a spectacular feature for me is that my last camera (a Casio Exilim) came with a dock that you set the entire camera in. After about a year and a half, the dock was damaged, making it impossible to either charge my camera or transfer photos to my computer. When I went to get a new dock, however, Casio no longer made any docks that were compatible with my camera, and the only place I could find a compatible dock was on eBay in Hong Kong for a price that was far above what the dock was worth. With this camera, I don't have to worry about the camera itself becoming unusable simply because one of its accessories is damaged.

Another feature I like is the focus. You can touch the screen wherever you want the camera to focus, rather than the camera automatically focusing on the middle of the shot.

And the image stabilization really does work! On the drive home from the store I took a picture out the window, and while the outside images were a bit fuzzy, the reflection on the window was perfectly in focus- while the vehicle was in motion! Most cameras would just get confused and make it all blurry. That really impressed me.

One of the other complaints about some of the previous touch-screen models is that one's right thumb would rest on the upper right side of the screen and accidentally keep hitting the buttons there. This camera has a bit of a buffer in the form of a ribbed strip of plastic about 1/4" wide, providing a place to rest your thumb off of the screen.

And gosh, this camera is just so stylish and sharp!! I love it!!

Not for Professional Photographers
1. This is not a camera for professional photographers. This IS a camera for those who take lots of outdoor shots, those who like the convenience of a small camera, and those who like Sony.

2. This is not a great camera for indoors/low light conditions. This is a great camera for action shots (when placed on the right settings).

3. I LOVE this camera for what I do, which is a lot of close up still life type shots. It hooks up to my HDTV and plays the most beautiful slideshows I've ever seen. The 8mp may be too much for some, but I tend to print large scale photos from my digital files, and the 8mp is PERFECT for me.

4. Being a Sony person, I have several MS Duo sticks laying around. Anyone who's got a kid with a PSP will know these aren't obsolete. I like the fact that the MS Duo isn't tiny, like some of the SD kin. I hate fubmling for a teeny-tiny little card and being afraid I'm going to lose it. I don't have that problem with this camera.

5. I really, really love the touch screen. It's big, beautiful, clear and responsive. I did put a screen protector on it as soon as I had it in my hands, so that it wouldn't get scratched. But it's stood up to 6 yr old hands many times without damage.

6. This camera is a great size for a 'Mom on the go' because it slips into a purse or back pocket very easily. The internal zoom has got to be one of the coolest things ever. I love that I can get the shot when others with their standard zooms can not.

7. All in all I would most certainly recommend this camera. It takes a little while to play with the settings and learn how to use it, but it's well worth it. It takes great photos, has a great form factor, and is very reliable.

GOOD digital camera
Excellent camera but it takes some time to learn to used it. Some users may get poor quality photos. There are other cameras cheaper and easier to use to obtain good pics. But there are few cameras so good looking. I recommend try it before buy it to decide if is what you want.

So cute, but definitely not a good value.
I bought this camera 1 year ago. I thought that because it was Sony and was expensive, it would be a good camera. I also loved the sleek design and the large LCD touch screen. Although this camera isn't terrible, there are definitely better out there (and for less $!). I have a 1 year old and thanks to this camera I have missed out on some special moments. I've been surprised to find that pictures that look good on the LCD screen are in fact blurry, something you don't always notice until you upload them to your computer. Here are the good and bad things I've noticed with this camera over the last year.
Pros:
-Large, crisp LCD screen
-Pictures taken outdoors can come out beautifully!
-Battery charge lasts a decent amount of time
-Sleek, slim design is eye-catching takes up little room in your bag
-You can hook it up to your TV for a slide show (which you can add music to by uploading the music to your camera)
-You can draw on your pics using the stylus and you can add 'stamps' to pics, too
-You can remove red eye and crop photos right there on the camera!

Cons:
-Although the touch screen was appealing at first, it's more of a pain. It gets so dirty, and the menu is ridiculous. You have to go through way too many options just to review your pics.
-The lens is in an awkward place...if you're used to holding your camera with two hands while you take a pic, it's very likely that one of your fingers is going to be in your picture!
-You must use SONY everything...not convenient if you happen to want or need a new battery.
-This camera uses memory stick pro duo rather than a plain old sd card...more $$$
-Pics taken in lighting that is not absolutely PERFECT will most likely come out burry or dark. The flash doesn't always know when to go off when in auto mode
-For some reason, I often can see dust in my pictures because the light from the flash reflects off of it somehow
-It takes a while to focus in order to get a clear pic, not good for someone trying to take pics of a busy toddler
-Shutter speed could be faster
-Face detection is hit or miss, and without it most pics of my son come out blurry
-Smile shutter was completely useless for me b/c it really only detects huge, cheesy smiles that you wouldn't want a picture of anyway

That's all I can think of. I just went today and purchased a Canon SD790IS and I hope I will be pleased with that camera. I would never buy a Sony camera again...it was way too expensive and the fancy features don't make up for the bad picture quality.

Great for stills but not action shots
Don't let my title fool you - I love this camera. It takes wonderful still pictures that come out clear and beautiful. But whenever I attempt to take a night picture without flash or of a moving object, they come out blurry. I have tried using the different settings but I still can not get the pictures to come out in focus. The battery last a very, very long time and extremely user friendly in regards to menu features and uploading to PC.

Great Item
Sony's has never failed to impress me. I recently owned the W70 and loved it and i love this.

The pictures are good and the in-camera features and modifications are well placed.

The pictures are great and video is great and the camera is pretty stylish.

Cons: You can't zoom in with the camera in video mode but it's alright since the last W70 didn't have that feature too but it would've been nicer if it did. The button lags a little bit when i try to view the picture but no big deal.

i bought this camera a little while ago and i love it. it let's me do so many cool thing that just make the rest of the family jealous. i would recommend this camera if you like the Sony Brand for camera.

Worth every penny
This camera is one of the best purchases I've ever made. I use to buy the cheaper model digital cameras and always gripe about red eye or blurry pictures or I couldn't see the pics on the back of the camera. NO more. You can Definately see the pics you take and all the features on this thing. I'm constantly finding cool new little capabilities this thing can do. Reviewing a picture that was taken and then touch screening it to zoom in left or right etc was great. And the smile capture was pretty funny to use and it worked great. I let some of my friends that are known for taking the worse pictures and it even stepped in and made sure they couldn't even take a bad picture. Great low light capability. Trust me you will not be disappointed with this picture. Buy, buy, buy it.

3 DIFFERENT MECHANICAL PROBLEMS
I actually have a different model, the 6.0 MP version purchased 2 1/2 years ago. But it looks exactly the same, so the mechanicals are probably the same. It was a great little camera while it lasted. Great pictures and great battery life. And as far I'm concerned, 6 MP is all I (and probably most people) really need.

After exactly 12 mos the rotary function switch started to act up, switching between adjacent modes unless I kept pressure on it with my finger. It got worse with time. Then I had the apparently common "stuck lens problem"; the fix is to bang it on the table, which worked. Then, last week, the shutter button broke off while it was in my wifes purse.

So I'm in the market for a new camera; it won't be another Sony.

Great Price, Without Sacrificing Performance
The DSC-W55 was my first Digital Camera and wow, what an impressive first camera to own.

The picture quality is very good, it takes pictures fast, and I put an 8 GB card into it and I can take almost 2 hours of video. The video feature really does make this a video camera as well, high quality and such.

Sony DSC-W55 Camera is junk
This is my second camera of this model. I loved the first one I bought last year, but dropped it on the kitchen counter about 12 inches and the lens stopped working. I was quoted $150 to repair it, and instead opted to buy the same model again because it took great photos and thinking the first camera was a lemon. Six months into owning the 2nd camera, the lens quit ejecting. In addition to cheap plastic parts on the sides, this will be my last Sony camera.

Among the best
I bought this little gem off ebay about a month ago, and it came with nothing but the camera (and fortunately the battery). So I had to get the funky memory stick or whatever they call it, but it does go directly into the computer slot, so no problem there, that's how I always do it. (Does anyone fool around with USB cords?-what a nuisance)
Great pictures in a small size, to me this is a camera that will fit in a jacket pocket.
I've no problem with indoor shots-normally turn the flash off anyway because the first few I took it popped up on me unexpectedly. But it is a little bright, since I don't have the manual I didn't know til I read some other reviews that it can be adjusted. And I could always go to the website to look for it (right-like I'd do that)
As the last paragraph alludes to, I'm a point & shoot guy, DSLRs kind of scare me so I'll use auto 95% of the time. That little mtn switch works well though for fall colors scenery.
Guess I'll just fool around with it some more and enjoy the results!
P.S. Get over that lens cap thing- the automatic ones do just jam after a while. Wish I had a cap for mine-have to put it back in the case all the time (of course, had to get that ala carte too) BTW a canon IS 2S case is perfect for this, and the canon is too big for it. Wrist straps are a dime a dozen-just use one off an old radio or something

WONDERFUL CAMERA
I have taken pictures of everything from my son's birth to the lava fields in Hawaii. All pictures came out beautiful. Very easy camera to use.

Good product
I bought two of these cameras. First one works great, nice pictures, clear, no problems so far. The second one i just received in the mail and i must tell you... THE BOX WAS OPEN (stickers were torn off, etc. ) when i received it. Can't find a phone number for Amazon.com anywhere to speak to someone about why the box was open. Very disapointed in Amazon about not providing the phone number. They jerk you around back and forth with FAQ but there is no phone number and my issue is not covered in FAQ. I hope there are no problems with this camera because I wouldn't know where to even start without a phone number and we all know how sending e-mails about a problem goes. Good Luck

Not as good as H1 or H2 - but still decent
I have owned the H1 and H2 and they are superior in quality compared to this camera. I use the H7 for work and bought it as a replacement for the H2 when the H2's shutter button stopped working. I have the H1 as my personal camera and it is by far the best in quality. My main concerns with the H7 are that it activates the flash when it doesn't seem to be necessary, the optics don't seem to be as good as the two previous models and the camera just feels "cheaper" by comparison. When I took pictures with the other cameras, I got some amazing shots. Like my dog's whiskers in perfect focus from across the room. If you can get a hold of an H1 somewhere, jump on it.

No Remote
This camera does everything is claims to do. However, I have only one complaint. It does not have a remote control option. Certainly, you may accomplish the same thing with it's internal timer. However, there are times when you would prefer to have that nifty 6ft. Remote shutter control. Other than this it is a great camera.

Sony Cybershot 7.2 MP camera died right after 1 year warranty expired
Suddenly, while traveling, this Sony Cybershot 7.2 MP stopped working. It was exactly 1 year after purchase, right after the warranty expired. Very disappointing.

An electronic problem causes a complete freezing-up right after the shutter button is pushed, resulting in a blank black viewer. After it finally releases from the freeze, no picture has been taken.

Repair work costs more than to replace camera, of course. I will think twice before buying Sony camera again.

As a photographer, I have owned many different cameras. Never have had a complete malfunction on a camera ever, except in a used Nikon I bought from the guys at the B&H Used Camera Dept in NYC.

This Sony should have been better and should have lasted much longer. My old Olympus digital lasted at least five years with no problem.

Pics as good as SLR for a fraction of the price
I am not an expert, but the pictures from this camera look as good as pics from an expensive SLR camera. People can't believe the pictures I take with this camera. The 12X zoom makes it perfect for sporting events and your kid's school events. Unbelievable pictures.
The only downside is that the camera is big (like an SLR) so we also have a smaller one to carry around everyday. But our everyday camera can't zoom in like this one.
Be prepared, this thing is big but it is worth lugging around if you want really good pictures and the 3X zoom on a small camera just won't cut it. The price is so reasonable that you can get both this one and a small everyday camera.

Do not buy this Camera
I got this camera last year to replace my Canon SD10 which i loved and i still love becasue it works better than this new DSC-W80. It takes blurry pictures, shutter is too slow and its just a piece of junk. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! and trust me there is no operator error, i owned many cameras and i know how to take a picture.

Overall, disappointed
My wife bought this camera about 10 months ago, in (long advance) preparation for a trip this winter. She has been using a Nikon Coolpix 8700 that she's very pleased with, but wanted something pocketable. She has some balance issues, so the "Steady Shot" image stabilization was attractive. After reading reviews in a leading consumer publication, she bought the DSC-W80.

Positives: Outdoors, it does very well. Colors are warm and true. The image stabilization works well (I have a mild hand tremor, so I'm a good tester...) Sharpness is acceptable.

Negatives: Indoors, not so hot. As has been posted elswhere, when the camera is faced with dim illumination, the in-camera processing creates a lot of noise, which obliterates most detail in the images. The flash is feeble, and somewhat slow to fire. It commonly produces a "hot spot" in the center of the image, rather than even lighting. The menu system is much less intuitive than on the Nikons we both have, or on some of the Canons I've been looking at. One of the strangest things I have run into is that you can set the size of the captured file (i.e. number of MP), but not the display resolution. For example, a 7MP image comes up on screen as a 72 px/inch, 42.67 X 32 inch image. If you bring that image up on screen in Photoshop, and zoom in to 100%, you're looking at an oddly pixelated image for what should be your highest quality setting. The only cure I've found for on-screen viewing is to run it through Photoshop and resize it both by size and by pixels/inch. Now maybe that's just a Sony oddity that has only stymied me, but I thought it was worth putting out there. Hopefully this is useful information for you.

An outstanding pocket camera
I bought the Sony DSC-W80 on clearance from Compusa 9 months ago. I had went in hoping to score a Canon SD-1000, but the DSC-W80 was on of the alternates I was considering and the price was right. Right after I bought, I found out my sister in law went into labor and my niece was going to be born that evening. Needless to say the camera got a work out right then. First off, in low light situations, especially without the flash, the images will get really grainy. My understanding is that this is because to make these cameras so small, the photosensor is very small as well, which means it won't work as well in a low light environment, if this concerns you, step up to a slightly large point and shoot digital camera, it won't be pocket sized, but you'll get better low light images.

I was able to get great photo's and videos of my nieces birth with a 1gb memory stick installed, but I did notice the low light issue, again, that's the trade off for a camera this small, so I can live with it. Since then, I carry this camera with me all of the time, and it works great, I can usually get by with charging the battery once a week, and downloading the photos off at the same time. The thing takes outstanding photo's, I use it at the highest resolution for photo's and they are very sharp. When I'm shooting movies, I use standard quality, and get a decent balance between image quality and file size, the built in mike does a remarkable job picking up audio while shooting videos.

Considering this camera was my second choice it has been a welcome surprise that has done a remarkably good job as a constant carry camera. Now I just need a DSLR....

Even in 2008 the picture quality rocks!
I have owned my DSC-V1 for at least 5 years and remembered paying over $500 for it new.
So why am I writing this review in 2008? Well the camera has survived many world trips, drops and still works great but I convinced my wife that it was time for a new one. So we started our research and bought the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5K since the reviews were awesome.
Then we took our first picture - we looked at each other and thought - our Sony takes better pictures. But I really wanted to love and keep this Lumix with HD video and all, so I took a slew of pictures with both cameras and asked my wife to tell me which ones she preferred - 90% of the time the Sony photo was preferred. So we visited her friend that owned the same Lumix (maybe we got a defective one) and compared more photos (even swapped memory cards) and again the photo quality from the Sony was better.
So how can all those reviewers get it wrong? Because in most cases they never do a photo comparison but if you did, boy would you be confused - I think it is easier to just be happier in your bliss.
We also tried a Canon SD850 and go the same results.
So I still have my DSC-V1 because I feel like I would have to go with a DSLR to find better photo quality. You can read all the reviews and specs until you eyes and head spin but in the end the proof is in the picture.
I rated the camera 4 stars but I agree with the reviewers about the speed and flash placement but if you want a camera that takes great quality photos, is durable and very affordable then look no further.

This is a very capable digital camera 3+ years after purchase
I do not agree with the negative comments regarding picture quality on the DSC-V1 as posted by other reviewers. I do agree, however, with the comments about the flash recharge time and how lousy that performance is. I got past that by purchasing an external flash and attaching it to the hot shoe on top of the camera (How many other digital cameras in the point and shoot class have a hot shoe????? Huge Plus for the DSC-V1 there).

Now, this camera was affected by the CCD issue that affected many camera families (not just Sony) over that last few years. Sony offered a free replacement of the CCD and I took advantage of it. I knew I was going to be without the camera for a few weeks, while the repair and shipping took place. But I had a vacation trip planned during that time, and I needed a camera.

So I went out and bought a Sony DSC-T30 7.2 megapixel camera to use for the trip. It seemed like a great camera, and it's actually pretty capable. But the DSC-V1 just crushes it in photo quality. The color shading on the V1, and the depth of field are so much better -- and that surprised me based on the 5 megapixel vs. 7.2 megapixel specs. My wife still likes the T30 for the size, as it's case fits in her pocketbook nicely. But I use the DSC-V1 almost exclusively. The external flash took care of the ONLY negative I could come up with. I feel I hit a home run with that purchase.

Hate this camera, buying a new one asap!
So many little annoying things about this camera! Everytime anyone else takes a picture, I have to tell them not to put their finger on the flash which is placed in the worst place possible. Takes really bad indoor pictures. If the object (say kids)is even slightly moving the picture is soooooo blury! The flash takes so much time to recharge the by the time you want to take another picture the moments has come and gone! Thank goodness for photoshop because I am constantly ajusting the color quality, and red eye. It is so bulky compared to most cameras! The battery doesnt last more than 30 minutes. I would give this camera no stars but it wasn't an option! Don't waste your money. Buy a cannon!

Great camera !
I had purchased my Sony DSC-W5 in 2005, the pictures are razor sharp, the built in audio / video are great , the camera has a well built feel, not cheap and plasticy like a lot of cameras on the market. Since this has been out for approx 3 years now, most of todays cameras are much smaller, but i dont care too much for micro-electronics. Bottom line, great camera

Great Little Camera
I have had this camera for over 3 years and have been pretty happy with it overall. I have not taken any time to figure out anything tricky with it, just point and shoot! This little camera has been all over the place with my family and we have taken some great photos with it. The only reason I am in the market for a new camera is because I would like to upgrade to the Image Stabilization feature.

Sony Cybershot 5.1
I've owned two of these cameras in two years. They take great pictures. There is however, a Serious Problem with Dust getting inside the Camera. This dust causes severe spots on the Images. The Only Recourse is to send to Sony for cleaning which can can cost about $150 or more. I'm now in the market for yet another camera; the Spots are really getting bad now. Even though I love the pictures on my Cybershot, I will choose a different camera. I've been burned twice.

Sony F707 Retrospective Review
I'm out shopping for a new camcorder and am leaning towards a Sony model. This brought to mind my Sony F707.

**ON THE UP SIDE**

I bought it in 2001 and paid a lot. I think with all the stuff I got with it, it came to about $1300. Best money I ever spent on an electronic device.

First off - if you have this camera or are picking one up, drop $10 on an appropriately sized UV lens attachment. It doesn't really change your pictures, at all (it's a clear lens). What it does do, however, is protect your precious and expensive Zeiss lens underneath. Over the years, my UV lens - in place ALL THE TIME - has saved me from trashing the *REAL* lens multiple times. I've had to replace the UV lens twice - at a cost of 20 more dollars. That, my friends, is a bargain compared to the alternative. The fact that you can attach any number of aftermarket things to the lens (because it is standard sized) is just plain awesome.

I got a 128MB stick with the camera. Sounds sort of laughable now, but I've operated that camera at the highest resolution for every picture from day ONE. No problem. It still fits 60 or so pictures. Have a laptop handy with a USB stick reader and you've got plenty of storage.

I've taken this camera everywhere. From the Mayan ruins in Mexico to the top of the CN Tower in Toronto - the pictures I have taken as a rank amateur have impressed many people. Most recently, I used it at the Philadelphia Phillies World Series Victory Parade in Philly (DUH!). With the way the camera twists, I was easily able to hold it HIGH up over my head and still get exactly the shot I wanted. People see the pictures and think I was in the front row when, in fact, I was about 5 rows people deep into the crowd. The sea of red hats/shirts contrasted against the buildings in a mixed light environment (buildings/shadows/bright spots) looks awesome.

There are LOTS of settings to play with if you want to experiment. Some of my coolest shots where nighttime long-exposure pictures of the illuminated Niagara Falls. And I pulled it off without a tripod on hand (hold camera VERY still...LOL).

I take a lot of pictures of my kid's sports activities. While there is a delay on the initial click-to-picture process, it doesn't take long to get used to. In any event, I find the built-in "Burst-3" mode to be very useful for sports. I've gotten more sweet shots that way - Bursting "around" the moment I want to photograph...outstanding.

**ON THE DOWNSIDE**

In 2004 or so, I suffered the very common "loose focus ring" problem. This was followed in 2005 by the [very related] "front part of camera falls off" problem and it "now rattles inside" problem (loose screws). It seems there are a few screws that hold that whole mess together on the inside that have a tendency to come loose. Fortunately, at the time, I found a forum on a website that included a posting of the nature of the problem and the steps (step-by-step screenshots/descriptions) to repair it without having to take it to Sony. It is very particular about how it comes apart and (of course) goes back together. If you have the "loose focus ring problem" - or the more advanced stage of that, the "lens falls off front of camera problem", let me know. I saved it and will send you the repair guide in .PDF format. thedunlapfamilyATcomcastDOTnet.

BTW - I came to realize the common problem(s) described above are caused by the relatively "violent" spring action of the pop-up flash. Over the years after hundreds (thousands?) of "POP!"s from the flash, the screws in question get slowly rattled looser and looser. Finally, they fall out, but stay contained within the camera.

Once I performed that repair, though, everything was fine. I used Loctite on the screws so they'll never fall out again.

The motion pictures (low quality video) it takes are, especially by 2008 standards, a complete joke - many (most?) cell phones take better video, now. But I found it handy from time to time. Most recently, I used it to have some woman tell me her contact information so I could send her the pictures I had taken. Far easier than writing it down, you know? The sound, at least, is pretty impressive, considering.

**IN THE END**

My camera still works like a champ. I see no reason to upgrade until Sony (or somebody else) essentially re-releases the same camera with updated electronic guts. The physical camera, itself, is just about flawless.

I'm the first to rip a product if it sucks, so I figured I'd take a moment to praise this item that has been worth every penny.

**FINAL WORD**

If you can pick up this camera used and in good condition (especially the Zeiss lens), do it. Get that UV lens/filter I told you about. If nothing else, give it to your teenage aspiring photographer. Let their imaginations run wild with all the cool settings - settings that STILL don't exist on 90% of the cameras being put out today. Enjoy.

I have been having this camera for 5 years and was never disappointed with its fantastic picture quality. It is a really superb camera!

The best photographic experience
I've this camera since 2001 the cost was 762$. The camera has been worth every dollar I paid. Everytime I take pictures and share them with friends they get really impressed. I've taken pictures like a pro. I bought a optional mounted flash and in a enclosed space and pointing the flash to the ceiling I've taken the most vivid pictures I could dream of. I've captured the most wonderful still moments of a party with incredible detail. The optical zoom allows me to get a close up of a face from my 6th floor apartment building down to the street. I've thought of buying a new one just because of obsolence you know! but It's gonna be difficult to find another camera that can give me so much fun.

Spend a little more on a better camera
I bought this camera for my wife for Xmas of 07. The camera worked great until last week, end of Sept of 08. I looked at all the bad reviews to see if anyone had the same problem I had. The LCD screen stopped working. You turn it on and nothing on the screen, just blank. I'm willing to believe it has something to do with the lens because older pics on the memory card show on the screen fine along with all the icons but now no pics can be taken and no picture on screen when camera is on and pointed. Just sent it back to Sony for fixing today. We'll see. If they want to charge me for fixing it, I'll just have to tell them to shove the camera where the sun doesn't shine and never buy sony again. I'll go back to Canon. It's a shame, it "WAS" a great camera. This is really pissing me off, the Sony was replacing a Kodak that stopped working after 5 months. Don't buy Kodak either.

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects eight different types of scenes and selects the appropriate camera settings: Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a Tripod, Portrait, Landscape and Macro. iSCN has two modes: Advanced and Auto. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. Not as good as I had hoped
Small enough to fit in my pocket, however, after 1 week, the screen got a hairline fracture. Even with the pointer pen, screen easily stores fingerprints. Buttons are hard to push with pointer, and navigating is not easy. The flash is VERY Bright (blinding - the kids no longer enjoy having their picture taken), and I have not figured out how to soften it. I have read the manual cover to cover and still have difficults getting the performance I need. First batch of pictures were VERY Grainy (my old Kodak 3.1MP camera took clearer images).

Sony replaced the screen quickly, which was very nice. Perhaps I just need to get acclimated with it more.

great camera
there ara many camera in the market, when i buy one i focus on a balance bteween portability a quality, and this slim camara fit perfect on that.

It is very thin.... nice looking , great color (brown). and good quality..

By the way im not a pro... i just take picture of my freinds and family and it fits perfect on my fron pocket of my jeans

Good Video - Decent Camera - Minor Flaws
I was looking to replace my 5 year old digital camera (Minolta Dimage G400 - 4 mpxl) and 2 year old mini DV camcorder with one camera that can take both pics and decent video. I've been very pleased with the video that the T500 takes. I find myself capturing many of the funny thing my 2 yr old does that I would have otherwise missed because I wasn't lugging around my camcorder. In that regard, I am very happy with my purchase. There are, however, a few things I am not so pleased with:
1.) The battery life is awful.
2.) The auto focus in low light takes a significant amount of time and there were instances where I couldn't get it to focus at all and then it wouldn't even take the picture!
3.) When I try to import the video into iMovie, it doesn't import normally through the default window that pops up. I have to exit out of that and go and navigate to the memory stick and import in the clips that way.

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and I think it is a step in the right direction from the equipment I had, however, there are a couple small nuisances that remind me it isn't the "perfect" camera.

Video is nice but still images can't compare to Canon

I have owned the Sony T100 and T300 (10.1MP) and was never happy with the image quality of either. I purchased and then gave this T500 away, because I was not happy with the larger size and the image quality of both indoor and outdoor images. Images which seem to be, less impressive than the 8MP T100 I had. I use Sony Vaio notebooks and love most Sony products, but Sony digital cameras, just don't perform well, compared to Canon. Sony always wins, when it comes to the style and looks, of their camera's (compact cameras) but the same can't be said, when it comes to the look of Sony images.

After owning the T100 and T300 and giving them away, along with all of their extra batteries and Memory Sticks, I was sure I'd be staying away from Sony Camera's..... Then came along a new HD compact shooter that caught my attention unlike the other HD compacts (image quality of the Samsung HD compacts is very poor). The HD video was my only reason, for giving Cybershot's another try and yes the HD video is pretty nice.

However, I'm not as impressed, as many who are new to HD shooting are. I shoot a lot of HD on a Canon Vixia HF11. The canon is small for a camcorder but not able to fit in any normal human size pockets (perhaps a large jacket pocket). Having HD in your pocket is nice but it came down to one question for me: Would I rather have the best still images in my pocket or the best video in my pocket (as of now, nobody can give you both)? My answer, led me to the Canon SD990, and I am in love with this little (smaller than the T500) camera. And FINALLY Canon gives us the option, of having a nice black finish. If still images matter to you most of all; then take pictures with the T500 and SD990, both indoors and outdoors and view them on your PC screen, side by side and you'll see what I saw. Now when Canon comes out with HD like Sony, but with Canons better image quality, I'll be in line for that. BTW' another question I asked myself was how often do I ever shoot video from any compact I've ever owned? The answer was very little. And Like I mentioned, HD video is common for me so I suspect that for anyone new to HD video shooting, that after a short while, the novelty of shooting HD video from a compact shooter, will wear thin and still images will become the dominate choice in which having the best still image shooter, will be desired.

Also you will want to keep in mind that all that you've read about the low battery life is true. I couldn't't believe how quickly a fully charged battery ran down while shooting video and then also pretty quickly while just taking shots (I'm talking about less than 30min Arnold :-) ). The T300 was pretty bad with power consumption, but the T500 has only gotten MUCH worse.

In the journey of our lives, it's very nice to be able to capture moments, and in the long run, it will have worked out best, to have been able to capture those moments, in as high resolution as possible and for now, the SD990 offers that in compact form, better than anyone else (still images only of course).

Sony's latest Cyber-shot offering, the DSC-T500, is certainly keeping up with recent compact camera trends by incorporating HD-quality (1,280 x 720-pixel) movie capture. Sweetening this deal further is the integrated stereo audio recording, a feature found only on one other shooter to date, the Samsung NV24HD. Sony is targeting the T500 at hip, young, working adults, but our guess is that HD video capture will probably appeal more to the tech-savvy crowd. However, image quality left much to be desired, especially after seeing what the Cyber-shot DSC-T77 can deliver.

Design
The exterior of the Cyber-shot DSC-T500 looks typical of Sony's T-series shooters. There's the front sliding cover, clean button layout on the top, and as with its touchscreen-enabled point-and-shoots, the rear is clutter-free. However, we found some clever modifications made to this snapper.

Compared with the T77(bottom), the T500(top) is much thicker.

To allow users to change between shooting and video capture mode easily, Sony has implemented a switch around the shutter button which makes toggling between modes really simple. Surrounding this switch is the zoom collar which is positioned where our forefinger had easy access to.

Despite all these features which appear to make one-handed operation an intuitive task, we had to use our other hand to navigate the menus and change settings because the icons are scattered on both sides of the screen. This is not so much of a problem as a matter of personal preference.

Unlike the typical T-series shooters, we would not consider the T500 slim and light. Rather, it feels relatively substantial in our hands. The heft and weight are something we noticed immediately when we picked up the shooter, but since its target audience is the more tech-savvy crowd, we guess they wouldn't mind the slight bulk.

Features
The 10.1-megapixel T500 is Sony's venture into HD-quality video capture on a point-and-shoot. So naturally, this was one of the aspects we tested heavily on. The clip we recorded under daylight was pretty detailed and we were quite impressed. But as with most conventional compact shooters, we noticed there was a fair bit of noise dotting the clip in low-light conditions.

Audio-wise, the T500 supports stereo recording. The sonic pickup was one of the best we had tested in a point-and-shoot, and we could really hear the different sounds captured on both channels. To spice it up, the speaker on the Sony also provides stereo playback. It was certainly loud enough that playing it on the bus raised a few eyebrows.

Packed into the T500 is a 5x optical zoom lens, stereo microphone and speakers.

Unlike other HD video capture-enabled snappers which record in AVI format, Sony has opted for MPEG-4 instead. A 35-second recording on the T500 chalked up about 42MB which we found to be small, compared to the 30-second, 100MB clip on Samsung's NV24HD.

While recording clips, it was nice that we were able to zoom in and out, but the shooter didn't focus on several instances when we zoomed in on our subject. But we liked how the T500 was able to snap high-resolution still images while recording video.

The rear estate is taken up mostly by a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD. We found its response to be acceptable. We think this is because the icons are larger and makes for more accurate tapping. For more precise focusing on off-center subjects, we just had to tap on the screen and a box would appear to indicate the shooter's focus.

One feature we were amazed at is the 5x optical zoom that the T500 provides without protruding the lens. However, it lacks a wide-angle lens. If not it will be pitting against the NV24HD which has 24mm ultra-wide-angle optics. We also noted that an optical image stabilizer is used on the Sony rather than sensor-shift IS which the company has always employed in its point-and-shoots. This worked equally well, and we didn't detect any difference between the two IS systems.

For slightly more advanced users, adjustments to the flash output, color mode and exposure compensation can be made to achieve different looks and feels for the snaps.

An exclusion that Sony has made for this point-and-shoot would be the BIONZ image-processing engine. We found this to be rather odd because the company has always included this in its digital cameras, and we speculate that it could be due to the HD movie-recording function that requires a different chip for it to operate smoothly. With the lack of the BIONZ engine, the D-Range Optimizer feature has been removed, too. We will look at how this affects the image quality in the later part of the review.

There is 50MB of onboard memory in the T500, and you can buff it up with a Memory Stick PRO Duo flash card if you want to snap more shots or record longer video clips. A lithium-ion battery provides power to operate the point-and-shoot.

Performance
The timings that the T500 clocked in our tests were typical of how other point-and-shoots perform. Startup time was a hair less than 2 seconds, while shutter lag measured approximately 0.1 second. The time-to-first-shot was inconsistent though, because it tended to focus faster when faced with a landscape scene than with macro subjects. However, most compact point-and-shoots have the same problem.

For trigger-happy folks, the rated battery life of 180 shots may be a deal-breaker. In our tests, we managed to take about 100 shots, several HD movie clips and lots of tinkering around with the touchscreen before the battery went flat. This means the T500 may not really be suitable for holiday goers as the battery could be drained before the day is over.

Image Quality

Earlier on, we mentioned about Sony not having the BIONZ image-processing engine and D-Range Optimizer in the T500. It appears that without these two components, the image quality did suffer slightly. We did a quick comparison with some images taken with the Cyber-shot DSC-T77, and found the quality of pictures captured at ISO 400 favored the latter. Not only were more details retained, the noise-suppression algorithm was more efficient in cleaning up the image, too. For the T500, the picture was a tad too gritty for our liking, and details in certain areas were smeared.

However, the quality of pictures taken at ISO 80 to 200 was still acceptable. Noise reduction handled well, although it was clear that at ISO 200, details were smeared. At ISO 800, the images were not very sharp and, needless to say, at ISO 1,600 and 3,200, we could barely make out words in the test chart.

Another noteworthy point would be that the T500 tended to produce saturated colors, which in some cases appeared a bit unnatural. Also, there were tendencies to underexpose the picture but that was easily solved by manually compensating the exposure.

We liked how we could manipulate the flash output to achieve more natural-looking skin tones in portraits. In most cases, night portraits were nicely lit and backgrounds were exposed for, too.

Conclusion
Although the T500 has a swanky HD video-recording function, it seems the lack of the BIONZ engine has an impact on the image quaity. But a redeeming factor for the shooter would be the large 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD and the onboard stereo microphone and speaker. It didn't make us an instant Spielberg, but we really like how the recordings showed more details and the stereo playback adds extra punch to the clip. Would we pay S$799 for this point-and-shoot? Well, we have to admit there are better options out there, such as the NV24HD which comes with an ultra-wide-angle lens that we really fancy. But if you like the looks and style of the T500 and don't mind taking pictures at only low ISO settings, the little premium should be worth it.

Amazing video
This is THE camera if you want to capture your newborns' or kids moments. The video quality is amazing. I would have given it a 5 stars if not for the battery life. Expect to buy another battery as soon as you buy this camera.

Good camera. Takes pictures.

Takes GREAT pictures in Low Lighting!
I bought this camera because Consumer Reports rated it #1 for subcompact digital cameras. It was also only $299 here on Amazon.com (the price listed today is over $400). I have four criteria when it comes to a compact digital camera.

1. It must have a fast response time, both when I turn it on and in between shots. This Sony Cybershot is AWESOME. It is literally on and ready to shoot within milliseconds of hitting the power button. There's also NO delay between shots, which has been the bane of all the digital cameras I've ever owned. The ability to go from shot to shot without worrying about missing a great action photo or having to twiddle my thumbs while it writes to the compact flash or smart disk is a god send.

2. It must take GREAT shots in low lighting. I don't know how many crappy photos I've taken indoors at parties, museums, and more. I know we all have, even with those cameras that have 'indoor' modes but require a tripod to take a clear picture. Well, this baby takes absolutely stunning low light photos using ISO or ISO+ mode. They are clear and not at all blurry. Check out the photos I uploaded from a visit to a local aquarium in the Jelly Fish exhibit (where it's as dark as night in there). Not only did I NOT have to use a tripod to get a clear shot, but the photos came out rich in color and detail, especially considering this is not a DSLR.

3. It must have several scene modes. I am addicted to these modes as they often save me from some very bad shots. I am clueless on how to set anything manually. This camera offers a nice selection of scene modes, my favorite so far being the ISO+ for low light, indoor settings. But the landscape, portrait, and other modes have all proved equally adept at clear, brilliant pictures.

4. It must have a large LCD. My last digital camera had a 1.8" LCD and it was painfully small. I often couldn't tell that shots were out of focus until I imported them to my desktop. The Sony Cybershot has a vividly clear LCD that is large and bright, perfect for spotting bad shots on the spot. No more wondering if I've taken a good photo or not.

Overall, I'm extremely impressed with the Sony Cybershot. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it only has 3X optical zoom, up to 6X with digital. My last digital camera had 12X with digital zoom, and it was disappointing to find that even though I was buying a higher end subcompact camera, the zoom was a bit on the skimpy side.

Nevertheless, I won't be using my old digital camera even with its 12X zoom because the Sony blows it out of the water in terms of picture quality, compactness, and speed.

Horrible image quality, poor fit an finish
Don't make the same mistake I did and buy this camera based on all the "great" reviews here. Most people writing reviews here are amateurs (since only an amateur would buy this camera) and don't realize just how awful this camera's images are. I bought this camera for my sister after insufficient research, only to be shockingly disappointed.

The images are simply incredibly noisy, and Sony tries to cover up this massive shortfall by adding massive amount of digital "noise correction." What causes all this noise? This is simply a bad camera with a very insensitive CCD.

In very bright light, you will see noise even in darker colors.

In medium light or with a flash, you will see noise in all shades except whites and the brightest colors. This is how most of your pictures will look, like junk.

In low light, the noise problem is so overwhelming that "noise reduction" kicks in, trying to hide the fact that this is a poor quality camera. The "noise reduction" basically makes the image look like a pastel painting, and removes pretty much all the fine and even not-so-fine detail.

The end result is you will get less detail with this "10 megapixel" camera than I did with an Canon 4MP camera 6 years ago. If I had to rate the image quality, I'd say the camera takes pictures with about as much detail as a decent 3 MP camera.

The build quality is also lacking and unsophisticated. Though the camera looks nice in pictures, it feels cheap in your hand.

On the positive side, the 5x zoom is nice, and so is the user interface. Buy the 8 MP Canon, it is cheaper and takes much much better photos.

The "Super Steady Shot" is unbelievable. All the pictures I have taken have been blur free without using a tripod. Want a picture indoors without using flash to get that natural feeling this the camera is for you. Can't say enough about the auto focus. All the options you could think of. I've searched for 8 months the search is finally over!!
I have been looking for "The" perfect camera for about 8 months if not longer! I've wanted one for about 3 years and yesterday I finally made the purchase. I hate when cameras have a pause in between the click and the take. The pauses are normally so long that the moment you tried to capture is long gone. With the sony cybershot you click and you capture! That plus the beautifully clear image are what makes this camera great. I am a big breast cancer awareness supporter and the cybershot comes in pink! So for me it was perfect. I am also in the military and with the sony gps you can remember exactly where you take the picture. That is very neat being that I am going over seas soon. If you like slide shows which I do with music it's a great camera to have. It does just about anything you could want plus it has the smile feature, twilight, etc...ect..It's a great camera and I got it on sale!! 90$

THIS CAMERA IS PERFECT! IT CAN MAKE ANY LIGHTING SCENE,FOCUS ON ANY SUBJECT OR FORM AND PLAY MUSIC DURING THE SLIDESHOW. PLUS YOU CAN ADD YOUR OWN SLIDESHOW MUSIC-WHAT CAMERA CAN DO THAT?
